What Fords came with 5.0s? I’m going to the junkyard on thursday in search of one, but I dont exactly know what to look at. Here’s the criteria:
- 1993-1995 so it will be OBD1
- 5.0 V8
I have a going list of what Might have one:
- F150
- F250
- Explorer
- Mustang
- Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark Coupe
- Crown Vic/Town Car/Grand Marquis??? Had the Modular V8
- Econoline
- Full Size Bronco
Is there anything I’m Missing?

Didnt the early 90s ones have 5.0s?

Bronco. How can you forget OJ?
![]() 04/19/2016 at 17:14 |

Oh yeah, full size broncos had 5.0s

Oj son. Full-size Bronco.
Also, corresponding Mercury products, i.e. the Cougar. I would scratch the Town car off your list, IIRC the Town Car had the 4.6 starting in 90 or 91.

Mustang or Lincoln would probably be the places to look. 89 and up.
If you go for an OBD II Explorer 5.0 (yes I know you said you only want OBD I) you will probably get GT40 heads with it.

Shhh....Ford guys don’t like it when you point that out.

I thing Exploders only had the 4.0 Coyote during that time.
Thunderbird will have the 5.0 or the 3.8.
Some third gen ‘Stangs will too

4.951 doesn’t round to 5?
![]() 04/19/2016 at 17:33 |

Look for an Explorer, best version by far and many available. Then use a Fox body harness and computer

Riiiight thats it, this was all of memory, knew I would bugger something

Some things to muddy the water. Trucks were all batch fire (mostly, but not all, and not late Cali stuff), not like the Mustang SFI w/mass air. Also, only 95+ trucks got the 5.0 HO firing order (except some Broncos and the F250 I think). And that’s when they went MAF. HO uses the 351W cam timing (13726548). Standard 302 uses (15426378).
Speed density = batch fire (most likely)
MAF = SFI always (probably). But MAF trucks were also OBDII usually, but not always IIRC.
Batch fire will need a seq harness to run SFI, and a Mustang EEC will need 2x oxy sensors while the truck only needs one. And of course early Mustang were also speed density, but still SFI.
Early Ford EFI is like a puzzle, but full of stupid.

It rounds to 302. :)

Only if you’re stuck in the stone age.

Turbo 300 or gtfo.
![]() 04/19/2016 at 17:43 |

it does, but the ford 5.0/302 Windsor is 4,942 ci, in that case it rounds down. which is what he was asking. I know the coyote is 4.951 ci but still it’s more fun to round it down. the ford guys just love it when you do it and I’m a crowd pleaser. what can I say? ;)

Are you a fan of Cougars?

If you can find it separated from the rest of the engine, grab the intake manifold from the 98-ish Explorer 5.0L it was basically the iron version of the aluminum GT40 intake from the Lightning and Cobra.
Other then that, you have a decent list there.

This is always the right answer. Explorer 5.0 (has the GT40P heads) and then use the A9L EEC IV programmed w/TwEECer.

LOL I wasn’t sure if you were using the American or the European decimal mark. ‘Cause the other engine would be about this big.

Exploders didn’t get the 5.0 until 1996 models.
I would probably try to find a 5.0 HO as first priority and then locate the ECU and wiring separately if necessary. Actually, the later Explorer 5.0 has decent heads and intake. I’d look for one of those. The EFI stuff can be mix and matched pretty easily.

I’ll do what I can to help. Been many years since I was hands on 5.0 stuff though.
